ADHD symptom guide

Executive dysfunction

In plain language

Difficulty coordinating the mental processes used to start, sequence, monitor, and complete goal-directed activity.

What it can look like

Everyday examples.

01

Knowing what to do but not being able to begin

02

Losing track of steps in a multi-part project

03

Struggling to switch tasks or stop refining one detail

Context matters

A pattern is not a diagnosis.

Executive-function difficulties can occur with ADHD and with other conditions; they are not a diagnosis by themselves.

Clinicians consider persistence, developmental history, impairment, multiple settings, health, sleep, mood, anxiety, substance use, learning, and other possible explanations.
